These plastic canvas alphabet patterns are perfect for making banners to decorate your home for holidays or special occasions. They are also perfect for making letter magnets for beginning readers.
I designed these plastic canvas alphabet patterns over a decade ago when I wanted to make a “Happy Halloween” Banner out of plastic canvas for our entryway. I couldn’t find any patterns online, so I decided to design my own.
The letters are approx 4 inches tall and made on 7 count plastic canvas. If you need a smaller size, you can use 10 count plastic canvas.
Here is the first banner I ever made. Please ignore the hideous paint job on the walls! The previous owners of our house thought it was a good idea to paint clouds in the dining room. We just hadn’t gotten around to re-painting before I took this picture. Rest assured, our dining room is now all one color 🙂
The larger size of alphabet letters is perfect for making banners such as “Happy Birthday”. You could also use them to spell out a child’s name and use it as a wall hanging.
If you use 10 count plastic canvas, you could make alphabet magnets to help teach younger children their letters. Unlike plastic alphabet magnets which never seem to have enough of certain letters, with the plastic canvas ones you will never run out. You can always make more if you need them!

Stitches to use on these plastic canvas alphabet patterns
To stitch the letters quickly, I recommend using either the Continental Stitch or the Slanted Gobelin Stitch to fill in your plastic canvas letters.
If you want to get more fancy though, there are a variety of plastic canvas stitches you can use to fill the letters. If you need ideas on different plastic canvas stitches you can use to fill the letters, I highly recommend getting a copy of the Plastic Canvas Stitch Dictionary. I have it and use it all the time. This pattern book is a great way to learn new stitches that can really add that special something to your project!
